What is Caffeine?

In August, Google announced they were “working on a secret project”. This project is commonly known as Caffeine.

It’s the first step in a process that will let us push the envelope on size, indexing speed, accuracy, comprehensiveness and other dimensions.

Caffeine does not affect the user interface. The average person, the person not involved in the daily changes of what search engines do, probably will never even notice the change. Most of these new changes are “under the hood”. It involves a change in infrastructure and coding.

Search Engine Optimization

What does this mean from a search engine optimization stand point? Well, frankly not that much.

If you are working hard at good content and a great link structure currently, then you will continue to get rewarded for your efforts.

Social Media

Along with the basics of SEO, social media is going to take a much stronger role in search results. It will be important to continue your involvement with social media.

As noted before, Bing and Google to Integrate Twitter in Search. So it’s no surprise that social media is going to be an enhancement to search.

However, the key to social media is going to be not getting involved just because you feel you have to. Look for avenues to engage your customers. Work this into your company culture. Having a dedicated “Social Media Manager” is a nice touch, but ultimately it’s not enough. Only then will you be rewarded with “conversation”. Conversation leads to popularity. Popularity leads to links.

Ultimately, good social media is just good content. As always, good content is the key to search engine optimization, whether Caffeine or not.
