Dell is apparently testing Google’s Chrome operating system on several new prototypes, including netbook-style devices and tablet computers.

Google previously announced they are working with other technology companies as well, including Acer, Hewlett-Packard, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, and Toshiba. However, Dell wants to be on the leading edge of all of these companies.

We have to have a point of view on the industry and technology direction two years, three years down the road, so we continuously work with Google on this,” Amit Midha, Dell’s president for Greater China and South Asia as reported by Reuters.

With the success of the iPad, Dell is prepping itself for a loss of desktop and laptop demand. Michael Dell said, last week at Dell’s annual analyst meeting, that Chrome “runs great on many Dell products.

Google Chrome OS is a free open source project based on the open-source Linux. Immediate indications are that Chrome OS is only shipping on specific hardware from manufacturers and will not available for download.
